In 2023 Wouter Turkenburg operated in a dual role for the IASJ:

  • IASJ Service Bureau Coordinator
  • IASJ Executive Director.

IASJ Executive Director
The tasks of the Executive Director are non-paid, as is stated in the statutes.
The main tasks are:

  • networking and representing the IASJ at conferences, meetings, events;
  • maintaining contacts with, and servicing the IASJ membership, the IASJ Artistic Director, the IASJ Board;
  • (co)organizing IASJ Jazz Meetings and IASJ Conferences.

In 2023, the main activities were:

  • Assisting in organizing the 2023 IASJ Jazz Meeting in Helsinki, Finland;
  • Coordinating the research component of the 2023 IASJ Jazz Meeting;
  • Presenting the IASJ Research Journal at the GMTH Conference in September, Freiburg, Germany;
  • Co-organizing and presenting the IASJ Research Journal at the IASJ Research Conference in Graz, Austria (collaboration of the IASJ, KUG Performance, Research, and Music Aesthetics Institutes);
  • Coordinating postponing the 2024 IASJ Jazz Meeting in Tel Aviv, Israel;
  • Preparing the IASJ presence during the 2024 AEC PJP Platform in Odense, Denmark.

IASJ Service Bureau Coordinator
The main tasks of the SBC in 2023 were:

  • handling the payment of membership fee of over 90 individual, ordinary and associate members;
  • completing the switch to the semi-automatic bookkeeping system ‘MoneyBird’;
  • determining long term non-paying members, booking them as ‘uncollectable revenues’, thereby creating a more realistic (large negative amount) ‘results of operations’ in the 5-year report;
  • setting up the financial reports: the ledger-account and the five-year report, with assistance of the MoneyBird virtual assistant (Petra van de Ende);
  • presenting the financial reports to the bookkeeper (Monique de Adelhart Toorop) for control;
  • presenting and explaining the Financial Reports with the ‘Financial Committee’;
  • presenting the 5-year report, the balance and the financial planning in the General Assembly;
  • collecting information, writing, editing and sending out the monthly IASJ News Update;
  • setting up, updating and maintaining websites of future meetings as well as the past ones;
  • digitalization of the IASJ achieve.
  • producing the research activities of the IASJ: conferences, editor-in-chief of the IASJ Research Journal.

The compensation for the work of the IASJ Service Bureau Coordinator is paid via a payroll service called ‘TenToo’.

The ‘office’ is a ‘flex-office’ in Leiden, called Unit2. Space is rented one day a week.
The archive of the IASJ is in a 12m2 box in ‘All-Safe’, a self-storage building.
